Sigiriya,(Lion Rock) Magnificent Ancient Rock fortress, Royal citadel of ancient fame

Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks known as eighth wonder of the world and UNESCO listed world heritage historical and archaeological site.

 Sri lanka’s ancient architectural tradition is well portrayed at Sigiriya, the best preserved city center with best examples of ancient urban planning. This is a masterpiece of ancient engineering showing sophisticated city planning with stunning ingenious water gardens, the fusion of symmetrical and asymmetrical elements, use of varying levels and axial and radial planning. Path ways, mid-way up the rock famous sigiriya frescoes and beautiful paintings of celestial maidens (Apsaras) and iconic mirror wall, where ancient graffiti reveals visitors thoughts over a thousand years ago.

Sigiriya, this massive column of rock rising dramatically 200m above the surrounding plains located near the town of Dambulla in Matale District in Central province was transformed into a royal palace during the reign of King Kashypa in the 5th CE (477-495 AD).on a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gate way in the form of an enormous lion while his palace on the top.

After the king’s death, it became a Buddhist monastery until 14th century. Sigiriya is a symbol of Sri Lanka’s ingenuity which reflects the advanced hydraulic system and defensive mechanisms of Sri Lanka. 

At the base of the rock are extensive symmetrical gardens, Terraced gardens and boulder gardens among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.

The rock offers spectacular panoramic and breathtaking views that reward climbers/hikers who reach the summit through lions gate leading to summit.
